First U.S. first lady to preside over Council as Washington holds rotating presidency.

Melania Trump to Chair Historic UN Security Council Session

Melania Trump is set to chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, becoming the first U.S. first lady to preside over the body.

Her office said she will lead the session as the United States holds the Council’s rotating presidency for March, with discussions expected to focus on the role of education in promoting tolerance and peace. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed the unprecedented nature of the event, noting that no first lady or first gentleman has previously taken the Security Council gavel.

The session comes at a delicate moment in U.S.–UN relations. Washington, the organization’s largest financial contributor, remains billions of dollars behind in assessed contributions. Although the United States recently paid $160 million toward its regular budget, UN officials say roughly $4 billion remains outstanding. Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of mounting financial strain on the institution.

The meeting also takes place against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, adding further weight to what is already a historically symbolic moment at the Council.
