Regional tensions surge following reported high-level strikes and retaliatory attacks across the Gulf.
A major regional crisis is unfolding in the Middle East following reported joint strikes involving the United States and Israel that targeted senior Iranian leadership and strategic facilities.
Israel said its forces are striking military infrastructure in the “heart of Tehran,” focusing on missile capabilities and air defense systems. Explosions were reported in multiple areas of the Iranian capital, including districts near key civilian infrastructure.
Iranian authorities acknowledged the strikes and declared a national mourning period, while senior officials vowed retaliation. President Masoud Pezeshkian described resistance as a national responsibility, and high-ranking security figures warned of a forceful response. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also signaled that countermeasures were underway.
The confrontation rapidly spilled beyond Iran’s borders. Missile and drone activity was reported across parts of the Gulf, with explosions heard in several regional capitals. An oil tanker incident near Oman and reported activity near a US military facility in Erbil, Iraq, further heightened concerns. Airspace disruptions have affected commercial travel across the region.
International reaction has been swift. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced plans for an emergency meeting amid concerns over the safety of nuclear facilities. China called for restraint and an immediate ceasefire, urging diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation.
Protests have erupted in multiple countries, including demonstrations in South Asia and outside US diplomatic missions, while anti-war rallies were reported in American cities.
US President Donald Trump warned against further escalation, stating that any additional attacks would be met with overwhelming force.
With both sides exchanging threats and reports of senior military casualties, analysts warn the situation represents one of the most volatile moments in the region in recent years, raising fears of a broader and prolonged conflict.
