Nigerian preacher under probe over allegations of sexual abuse against multiple women

Police in Nigeria's commercial city, Lagos, have opened an investigation after multiple women alleged they were victims of gender-related abuses by Chris Okafor, a prominent preacher in the country.

On Sunday, January 4, Lagos State Police Command summoned Okafor for interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in relation to the allegations.

Authorities said Okafor, a senior pastor at the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries in Lagos state, will be subjected to a "thorough investigation."

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said in a statement on Sunday that the preacher will respond to accusations of "multiple rape and other sexual offences."

'Justice must prevail'

Adebisi added that "adequate security", as well as measures to protect the identities of Okafor's alleged victims had been put in place.

Police said that "justice must prevail in the whole episode" of the investigation against Okafor.

Law enforcement officers took up the matter after several women recently alleged online that they were victims of the preacher's sexual predation.

The allegations swirled on social media in December 2025, especially after a famous Nigerian actress, Doris Ogala, alleged publicly that she was Okafor's victim.

Okafor acknowledges 'mistakes'

According to Ogala, she was in an intimate relationship with Okafor since 2017, with the preacher promising her marriage under false pretences.

The actress said her affair with Okafor led to the collapse of her previous marriage.

Amid the litany of allegations, Okafor told his congregation in Lagos in late December that he had made "mistakes" in the past, and that he was taking responsibility for his actions.

The preacher further knelt on the pulpit and asked for forgiveness from the society, though he did not directly speak to the specific allegations of sexual misconduct.

Severe punishment

Okafor has since stepped down from his duties as the lead preacher of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries.

In Nigeria, an adult found guilty of rape risks up to life imprisonment, with the minimum punishment being 12 years in jail.
