President Randrianirina turns to reform figure to lead government after cabinet dismissal.
Madagascar’s President Michael Randrianirina has appointed anti-corruption chief Mamitiana Rajaonarison as the country’s new prime minister, days after dismissing the previous premier and the entire cabinet.
Randrianirina, who took power in October and has promised sweeping reforms, said the new prime minister would guide the government “on a clean path” and help restore public trust in state institutions.
Speaking on state television, the president praised Rajaonarison’s integrity, saying the country needs leaders who “cannot be swayed and cannot be bought.”
The president did not provide an explanation for the abrupt dismissal of former Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and the rest of the cabinet earlier in the week.
Since assuming power, Randrianirina has promoted a political agenda known as “Refoundation,” aimed at resetting governance after a political transition that removed the previous administration.
The programme focuses on strengthening state authority, combating corruption and rebuilding confidence in government institutions.
