Nearly 65,000 people displaced from Sudan's Kordofan due to insecurity: UN

Nearly 65,000 civilians have fled the Kordofan region in southern Sudan over the past three months due to escalating insecurity, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Monday.

In a statement, the UN agency said around 64,890 people were displaced from various areas of the Kordofan region between October 25 and December 30, 2025, as insecurity worsened.

The IOM added that its field teams recorded 56 displacement incidents during the reported period, including 17 in North Kordofan, 38 in South Kordofan, and one in West Kordofan.

According to the statement, 42,780 people fled North Kordofan, about 21,860 were displaced from South Kordofan, and 250 from the Geibaish area in West Kordofan.

Fierce fighting

The IOM said the figures are preliminary and subject to change due to ongoing insecurity.

The three Kordofan states— North, West, and South — have seen weeks of fierce fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), forcing tens of thousands of people to flee.

Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF now holds all five in the Darfur region, except for a few northern areas of North Darfur still under army control. The Sudanese army continues to dominate most of the remaining 13 states across the south, north, east, and central regions, including the capital, Khartoum.

The conflict between the army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.
