Ticket prices jump from $13 to $150 as officials debate who should pay

World Cup Train Fare Hike Sparks Backlash in New Jersey

Plans to sharply increase train ticket prices for World Cup matches in New Jersey have caused major controversy. The cost of a round-trip journey from New York’s Pennsylvania Station to the stadium in New Jersey could rise from $13 to $150 during the tournament.

NJ Transit says the increase is necessary because transporting large crowds—up to 82,000 people per match—will cost around $50 million, including managing delays and extra services.

However, Mikie Sherrill defended the decision while also criticizing the idea of making regular passengers pay for it. She argued that FIFA should cover these transportation costs, warning that local residents should not be burdened for years.

FIFA responded by pointing to changes in its agreements. While an earlier 2018 deal included free transportation for match days, a 2023 revision shifted the responsibility to fans, meaning ticket holders now have to pay their own travel costs.

The issue isn’t limited to New Jersey. In Boston, similar price hikes have already been introduced, with train fares rising from $20 to $80 during the tournament.

The debate highlights growing concerns about affordability for fans and who should bear the cost of hosting major global events like the World Cup.
