The nations reaffirmed support for an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines
Egypt, Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration called for the implementation of the second phase of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan and an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanon following a trilateral meeting.
The talks in the northern Egyptian city of El Alamein on Tuesday brought together Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
The three leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening peace, security, stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East while expanding cooperation through their trilateral mechanism launched in Cairo in November 2014.
On maritime boundaries, the statement said agreements and memorandums of understanding concerning delimitation “must be concluded in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.”
Gaza and Palestinian statehood
The three sides reaffirmed support for an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with UN resolutions.
They emphasized the importance of implementing the second phase of Trump’s Gaza plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803 to ensure the start of reconstruction and early recovery and the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.
The leaders also called for preserving the geographic, political and legal continuity between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and rejected attempts to separate the two territories or forcibly displace Palestinians.
Lebanon and Libya
On Lebanon, the three sides called for an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. They also supported strengthening Lebanese state institutions, particularly the armed forces, to enable the state to exercise its authority and sovereignty across the country.
Regarding Libya, the statement reaffirmed support for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity as well as a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process.
It also called for the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries and the holding of simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
Expanded trilateral cooperation
The leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, tourism, education, culture, migration and labor alongside security cooperation and efforts to combat organized crime and irregular migration.
Sisi stressed the importance of continuing to develop cooperation through the trilateral mechanism, while Christodoulides and Mitsotakis reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties.
The three sides agreed to hold their 11th trilateral summit in the Greek Cypriot Administration, without announcing a date. (edited)
