Top US Counterterrorism Chief Resigns Over Iran War

A senior US counterterrorism official has stepped down in protest over the ongoing conflict involving Iran, arguing that the war lacks both strategic necessity and legitimate justification.

Joseph Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, submitted his resignation to President Donald Trump, stating he could no longer support the war “in good conscience.” He maintained that Iran posed no immediate threat to the United States and suggested that the decision to engage in the conflict was shaped by external influence and pro-war lobbying pressure.

A former Green Beret with extensive combat experience, Kent becomes the first high-ranking official to resign over the issue, marking a significant moment within the administration. In his resignation letter, he warned that misinformation had played a central role in shaping public and political perceptions, ultimately driving the country toward conflict.

Kent also drew parallels with previous US military interventions, particularly the Iraq war, highlighting the heavy human and economic costs associated with decisions based on flawed intelligence and strategic misjudgments.

He concluded by stressing that he could not endorse a war that, in his view, fails to serve the national interest and risks repeating the costly mistakes of the past.
