Police enter the Constitutional Tribunal’s premises as its president, Bogdan Swieczkowski, is suspended amid a prolonged dispute over judicial appointments.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki cut short his flight to Senegal on Friday, saying he was returning to Poland after police entered the premises of the country’s Constitutional Tribunal and its president was suspended.
"At a moment like this, the President must be in Poland. I am cutting short my flight to Senegal. I am returning," Nawrocki wrote on X.
Police said officers entered the tribunal’s premises following incidents outside the court, including the throwing of dangerous objects at police.
The tribunal announced on its website that its president, Bogdan Swieczkowski, had been suspended on Friday.
Prolonged dispute paralyses Constitutional Tribunal
The developments come amid a long-running political dispute over the Constitutional Tribunal, which has effectively paralysed the institution.
Earlier this year, Nawrocki, an ally of Poland’s former nationalist government, refused to swear in three of six judges nominated by parliament.
Swieczkowski, meanwhile, declined to allow judges elected by the current parliamentary majority to take up their duties, deepening the standoff over the court’s composition and authority.
