Controversial figure faces charges from Benin as legal proceedings unfold in Pretoria.

Pan-African Activist Kemi Seba Arrested in South Africa Amid Extradition Request

Pan-African activist Kemi Seba has been arrested in South Africa and is now facing extradition proceedings to Benin, according to local authorities.

South African police stated that Seba was detained alongside his son on allegations of facilitating illegal entry into Zimbabwe via the Limpopo River. The arrest reportedly took place in a shopping center in Pretoria, where authorities also detained an alleged facilitator linked to the case.

Benin has issued an arrest warrant against Seba, accusing him of promoting actions against state security and inciting rebellion. He is known as a prominent and controversial voice in Pan-African movements and leads the NGO “Urgences panafricanistes.” With a strong social media following, he has frequently criticized France and African governments perceived as aligned with Paris.

Authorities indicated that Seba and his son were planning to travel onward to Europe after passing through Zimbabwe. Both have been placed in provisional detention, with a court appearance scheduled for April 20, 2026, as extradition procedures move forward.

The case unfolds against a sensitive political backdrop in Benin, following recent presidential election results that saw Romuald Wadagni declared the winner with over 94 percent of the vote, pending final confirmation.

The situation highlights growing tensions between political activism, state authority, and regional legal cooperation in West Africa.
