Pyongyang reports testing a new missile system and conducting a separate long-range cruise missile exercise, as tensions with Seoul remain high.
North Korea has tested a newly designed advanced air defence missile system, state media reported on Thursday, marking another military exercise in a week of intensified weapons activity on the Korean Peninsula.
The test took place on Wednesday under the supervision of General Kim Jong-sik, a member of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Military Commission, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
KCNA said the exercise was designed to verify the system's technical specifications, target detection and tracking capabilities, as well as the performance of its missile guidance and information-processing systems.
The announcement came a day after South Korea reported that Pyongyang had launched multiple missiles towards the sea.
Separate long-range cruise missile drill
North Korea also conducted a firing drill involving a military unit equipped with long-range strategic cruise missiles in the country's eastern region, KCNA reported, without specifying the location.
The agency said the unit successfully carried out a simulated strike against an airport target.
The two exercises mark the latest in a series of weapons tests conducted by Pyongyang over the past week.
Last Thursday, North Korea tested a 600-millimetre multiple rocket launcher, which it described as an "ultra-precision" system.
On Saturday, it tested a cluster-bomb warhead mounted on tactical ballistic missiles, followed by a test of a "dispersal warhead" for a strategic cruise missile on Monday.
Military tensions remain high
The repeated tests come amid joint military exercises by South Korea and the United States, as well as growing tensions between Seoul and Pyongyang.
South Korea has accused the North of causing an explosion inside the Demilitarised Zone on September 21 that wounded three South Korean soldiers.
Pyongyang has rejected the accusation and has not responded to Seoul's offer to restore military communication channels aimed at easing tensions.
