US president says he will likely work with Democrats unless they choose to be destructive, adding that he has veto power.
US President Donald Trump dismissed concerns on Wednesday that Democrats could seek to impeach him following their midterm election victories.
Trump said he was not worried about the prospect and warned that the move would backfire politically.
Speaking at the White House for the first time since the midterm results, Trump said he was “not even a little bit” concerned about impeachment.
“No, no, no, not even a little bit,” Trump said when asked whether he was worried about Democrats pursuing impeachment.
“I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did that, because it would be impeachment for no reason. For what? For having a successful country?” he added.
Hegseth ‘doing a very good job’
Trump suggested he could work with Democrats in Congress, provided they did not seek to obstruct his administration.
“I'll get along probably with the Democrats unless they want to be destructive, but I have the power of the veto,” he said.
Donald Trump also ruled out firing Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth despite suffering bruising midterm election losses that the US president has blamed on the war against Iran.
"No, I think he's doing a very good job," Trump said when asked if he was considering replacing Hegseth, a staunch proponent of military action against Iran.
His remarks came after Democrats secured control of the Senate and the House of Representatives in the midterm elections, as a wave of Democratic victories swept across the country.
