High-profile detention of opposition figure signals deepening scrutiny of former ruling elites.

Malawi Intensifies Anti-Corruption Drive with Arrest of Former Finance Minister

Malawian authorities have arrested former finance minister Simplex Chithyola on allegations of money laundering and abuse of office, marking a key moment in the country’s expanding anti-corruption campaign.

Chithyola, now an opposition leader in parliament, surrendered voluntarily after learning he was under investigation, according to his legal counsel. He served as finance minister between 2023 and 2025 under former President Lazarus Chakwera, whose administration was replaced following recent elections.

The arrest forms part of a broader crackdown targeting figures associated with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Authorities are investigating multiple cases of alleged financial misconduct and corruption linked to the previous government.

Chithyola had previously attracted public attention due to visible displays of wealth during his campaign for a senior party role. His case adds to a growing list of senior officials under investigation, with at least eight former ministers and high-ranking figures detained or questioned.

Among them are former cabinet secretary Colleen Zamba and ex-ministers from sectors such as trade, agriculture, and local government. Former finance minister Sosten Gwengwe has also faced detention before being released on bail.

Authorities have not yet announced a court date, and Chithyola has not publicly responded to the charges. Analysts suggest the unfolding investigations will serve as a crucial test of Malawi’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and governance reform.
