Appointment highlights influence of Revolutionary Guard in leadership transition
Mojtaba Khamenei has been chosen as Iran’s new supreme leader, according to state media reports, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei.
The decision was announced by the Assembly of Experts, which oversees leadership succession in the Islamic Republic.
Mojtaba Khamenei, known for his close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, had been widely seen as a possible successor within the country’s ruling establishment.
His appointment comes despite longstanding ideological resistance within Iran’s system to hereditary-style leadership transitions.
