Veteran leader seeks re-election after constitutional changes removed term and age limits.

Djibouti’s Guelleh Files Bid for Sixth Presidential Term

Djibouti’s long-serving president Ismail Omar Guelleh has officially submitted his candidacy for the April presidential election, positioning himself for a potential sixth term after more than two decades in power.

The application was filed with the Interior Ministry on Monday by campaign director Abdallah Abdillahi Miguil, a senior figure in the ruling Union for the Presidential Majority (UMP) coalition.

Guelleh, who has governed Djibouti since 1999, became eligible to run again after parliament removed the constitutional age limit for presidential candidates last year. Earlier reforms in 2010 had already abolished the two-term limit, paving the way for extended presidential mandates.

Supported by a coalition of pro-government parties, Guelleh is widely expected to be a key contender in the upcoming election. Electoral authorities will now examine all submitted candidacies before announcing the final list of approved candidates.

The official campaign period is expected to begin in the coming weeks as Djibouti prepares for the presidential vote.
