Damaged vessel carrying fuel and LNG poses ecological risk near Libyan waters
A damaged Russian tanker drifting uncontrolled in the Mediterranean has entered Libya’s search and rescue zone, triggering growing fears of a potential environmental disaster.
The uncrewed vessel, located roughly 40 nautical miles from Libya’s territorial waters, is carrying significant quantities of heavy oil, diesel, and an uncertain volume of liquefied natural gas. While no leaks have been detected so far, Italian authorities warn that the risk of gas release remains the most pressing concern.
Officials say that, if current winds and sea currents persist, the tanker could reach Libyan shores within days. Any intervention would fall under Libyan jurisdiction, though Italy has expressed readiness to assist if requested.
The tanker was severely damaged earlier this month in a suspected drone attack, reportedly linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Since then, it has been drifting without control, raising concerns over maritime safety.
European leaders from several Mediterranean countries have described the situation as an “imminent and serious risk,” calling for a coordinated EU response to prevent a large-scale ecological crisis. Beyond the immediate threat, the incident has also reignited concerns over unregulated vessels operating in sensitive maritime zones.
