Congo Airways grounded in 2024 less than a decade after it fully took off.

? DR Congo Moves to Revive National Carrier Congo Airways

The Democratic Republic of Congo has launched a new effort to revive its defunct national airline, Congo Airways, following its collapse amid financial and operational challenges in 2024.

President Félix Tshisekedi has instructed key government ministries to develop a detailed and realistic recovery strategy, emphasizing strict governance, financial oversight, and regulatory compliance. The plan is expected to include internal audits, improved management structures, and regular institutional reporting to ensure long-term sustainability.

Congo Airways had faced years of instability, with its fleet grounded due to high maintenance costs, safety concerns, and expired engine cycles. Repeated operational disruptions forced the airline to rely on costly leasing arrangements, further deepening its financial strain.

Although a restructuring roadmap was introduced in early 2025—including plans to acquire new Airbus aircraft and overhaul governance—the process stalled before implementation. The new directive signals renewed political will to restore the airline as a key component of national infrastructure.

Founded in 2014, Congo Airways played a crucial role in connecting domestic routes and select regional destinations. Its revival is seen as strategically important for a country seeking to strengthen economic integration and transport capacity.
