Authorities reaffirm sovereignty and warn against misinformation risks

Botswana Dismisses US Military Base Claims

Botswana has categorically rejected claims that it hosts a United States military base, underscoring the need for fact-based discourse on national security matters.

In a statement issued in Gaborone, government spokesperson Tuduetso Mokgosi affirmed that the Thebephatshwa Air Base is a sovereign facility fully owned and operated by the Botswana Defence Force. He reiterated that its functions are strictly aligned with the country’s national priorities.

Officials highlighted the base’s role in reinforcing emergency response capacity, supporting regional peacekeeping initiatives, and facilitating humanitarian operations, while maintaining military readiness.

Mokgosi further cautioned against the spread of misinformation, warning that unverified narratives—particularly those circulating across borders—could generate avoidable tensions. He reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to regional stability through cooperation, dialogue, and mutual respect.
