War and Hunger: Sudan’s Kitchen Volunteers Pay the Price

Sudan’s protracted conflict has turned community relief efforts into dangerous missions, with volunteers increasingly caught in the violence between the national army and the RSF.

The United Nations reports a sharp decline in security conditions, particularly in Darfur, where famine is rapidly advancing. Volunteers who operate public kitchens — often the only food source for displaced families — have become visible targets. Many have reportedly faced detention, extortion or fatal attacks.

The fall of Al Fasher marked a turning point in the conflict. After a prolonged siege, RSF fighters seized control of the city, triggering mass displacement and leaving thousands of civilians dead or wounded. With only a portion of residents able to escape, uncertainty surrounds the fate of those left behind.

Across the region, the same pattern persists: hunger deepens, humanitarian space shrinks, and the very people striving to keep communities alive are increasingly at risk.
