Turkish and EU initiatives aim to cushion impact of worsening humanitarian emergency.

International Aid Efforts Intensify as Somalia Battles Drought and Hunger

Humanitarian support for Somalia is gaining renewed momentum as both Turkish and European actors expand relief operations in response to worsening drought and food insecurity.

The Türkiye Diyanet Foundation has distributed 8,250 Ramadan food parcels across 13 regions, reaching communities struggling with limited access to food and water. Officials estimate that the effort could benefit nearly 80,000 people.

Meanwhile, the European Union has committed $74 million in additional funding to address urgent needs, including malnutrition treatment, emergency cash transfers, water access, and protection services.

With 6.5 million people facing hunger and nearly two million young children at risk of acute malnutrition, Somalia remains one of the most pressing humanitarian crises in the Horn of Africa.
