Phone talks cover bilateral and regional security amid US‑Israel strikes on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory actions affecting Gulf states and the Strait of Hormuz.

Türkiye and Qatar Discuss Defence Cooperation Amid Regional Tensions

Yasar Guler, defence minister of Türkiye, held a phone call with Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s deputy prime minister and minister of state for defence affairs, to discuss bilateral and regional security matters.

According to a statement from the Turkish National Defence Ministry, the two officials exchanged views on defence cooperation and the broader security situation in the region.

The discussion comes as tensions rise following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran that began on February 28. The attacks reportedly killed about 1,300 people, including Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

Iran has since retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel, as well as countries including Jordan and Iraq, along with Gulf states hosting US military facilities.

The crisis has also affected global energy routes, with Iran effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz around March 1. The waterway is a critical global energy corridor that typically handles about 20 million barrels of oil per day and roughly 20% of the world’s liquefied natural gas shipments.
