Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate Adamu Abubakar were killed in Katsina state on Monday.
A prominent Nigerian Muslim scholar known for advocating religious harmony has been shot dead outside his home, police said.
Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate Adamu Abubakar were killed in the town of Dutsin-Ma in northern Nigeria's Katsina state on Monday evening.
They were killed at around 1830 GMT "when two armed men riding on a motorcycle opened fire, fatally injuring both victims", police spokesman Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu said in a statement.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the killing and what their motive was. The region is facing rising violence by terrorists and criminal bandit gangs, as well as farmer-herder clashes and sometimes religious tensions.
