The aircraft was travelling from Austin to the Bahamas when it crashed near a mobile home park, prompting the evacuation of about 600 residents.
A Learjet 60 private jet has crashed into a neighbourhood in southern Florida, killing all nine people on board, officials said. The plane had departed from Austin, Texas, and was headed for the Bahamas, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
The crash occurred near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County, less than 11 kilometres from US President Donald Trump’s resort home, Mar-a-Lago.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as “cataclysmic”, saying there were no reports of injuries among people on the ground.
About 600 residents of a nearby mobile home park were evacuated and relocated to shelters, Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores said.
Trump had been at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday but departed from the nearby President Donald J. Trump International Airport shortly before the crash.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, the FAA said.
Aircraft reported turbulence and icing
Storms had been reported in the area. An audio recording posted on the air traffic website LiveATC.net appeared to capture the crew reporting moderate turbulence and managing ice shortly before the crash.
The recording captured a crew member saying the aircraft was picking up precipitation and needed to climb.
The person then declared an emergency, reporting a rapid descent and saying: “We’re going to crash into the ground.”
Communications stopped seconds later.
Unverified social media videos appeared to show the aircraft descending almost vertically before striking the ground, triggering a large fireball and leaving a flaming crater near a busy roadside.
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the crash.
