Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Jon Ossoff won re-election in Virginia and Georgia as early returns roll in.
Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Jon Ossoff have secured crucial re-election victories in the key US states of Virginia and Georgia, delivering early holds for their party in the high-stakes battle to overturn the Republican majority in the United States Senate.
The two victories allow Democrats to successfully defend vital battleground turf as they chase a net gain of four seats to wrest control of the 100-member chamber, where Republicans entered election night holding a 53–47 majority.
To capture the Senate majority, Democrats must protect seats in Georgia and Michigan whilst aiming to flip Republican-held seats in Maine and North Carolina, alongside at least two states carried by Trump by double digits in 2024, such as Ohio, Alaska, Iowa, or Texas.
Warner, Ossoff seal victories
In Virginia, Warner defeated Republican challenger Bert Mizusawa in the first Senate contest called of the night.
"Thank you, Virginia. It’s the honour of my lifetime to serve you. Here’s to six more years fighting for you," Warner stated on the X platform.
Warner, 71, a former Virginia governor first elected to the chamber in 2008, secured a fourth six-year term.
He serves as vice-chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
In Georgia, incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff clinched one of the nation's most competitive races, defeating Republican US Representative Mike Collins in a state Trump carried by two percentage points in 2024.
Ossoff, widely regarded as a potential 2028 presidential contender, established a massive financial advantage, outraising Collins by $126 million.
Collins had secured the Republican nomination with Trump's endorsement over former college football coach Derek Dooley—who was backed by outgoing Republican Governor Brian Kemp—and drew $18 million in outside spending after navigating a bruising primary and runoff.
