Visit highlights 50 years of relations and growing cooperation in trade and sustainability

China Strengthens Ties with Seychelles at End of African Tour

Han Zheng has wrapped up his African tour with a visit to Seychelles, marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During the visit, Han met with President Patrick Herminie and Vice President Sebastien Pillay. Their discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas like trade, infrastructure, digital technology, and the “blue economy” (sustainable use of ocean resources).

On the ground, Han inaugurated a China-funded housing project that will provide 140 homes, helping address local housing needs. He also visited a new television station supported by China, showing expanding cooperation in media and communication.

According to former vice president Vincent Meriton, this anniversary is a chance to reflect on progress in key sectors like education, health, and the environment.

Economic ties between the two countries remain strong, with trade reaching about $84 million in 2024. Cooperation is now increasingly focused on protecting marine resources while supporting economic growth, especially through joint efforts in fishing and ocean conservation.

Overall, this visit signals a continued partnership between China and Seychelles—one that blends development goals with environmental responsibility.
