The African Union (AU) has urged member states yet to ratify the continent’s Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls to take action, marking International Women’s Day with a renewed push for gender equality.
The African Union has called on member states that have not yet ratified the Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls to take action. The appeal was made as the continent marked International Women’s Day, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen gender equality and protect women’s rights.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission, said the convention represents an important step in protecting women and girls across Africa. He warned that violence against women remains one of the most widespread human rights challenges and stressed that addressing it is crucial not only for justice but also for peace, security, public health, and development.
Youssouf also praised the contributions of women who support and strengthen the AU’s work. He emphasized that women’s leadership is vital for building a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive continent.
The AU leader further pointed out that many women and girls across Africa carry the heavy responsibility of collecting water, often facing health and safety risks. He said that investing in water and sanitation systems and involving women in water management can lead to more inclusive, fair, and sustainable outcomes.
