During the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, supporters from various countries have continued to express solidarity with Palestine while protesting Israel.

World Cup Fans Protest Israel While Showing Strong Support for Palestine

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has become not only the world's biggest football tournament but also a platform where political expressions by supporters have drawn international attention.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel's military operations targeting civilians and residential areas have continued to generate widespread international criticism. The absence of international sanctions despite allegations of war crimes has remained a subject of debate across diplomatic, legal and civil society circles.

One of the latest points of discussion has centered on FIFA's decision not to suspend or sanction Israel from international football competitions. Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, independent sports organizations and civil society groups organized various demonstrations demanding that FIFA remove Israel from international football until further action is taken.

Although the Israeli national football team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Israeli supporters have travelled to host cities to watch tournament matches. According to reports from several venues, they have repeatedly encountered reactions from football fans representing different countries who openly expressed support for Palestine.

One of the earliest demonstrations took place on June 12 in Toronto, Canada, one of the tournament's host cities. A group of activists displayed a large banner reading "Kick Israel Out of FIFA" on one of the city's busiest main roads, drawing public attention to their campaign.

Another incident occurred during the Iran–New Zealand match played on June 16. An Israeli supporter reportedly attempted to display an Israeli flag inside the stadium. The attempt was not allowed, and the individual was met with negative reactions from surrounding spectators.

Public expressions continued throughout the tournament. On June 27 in Miami, Florida, a Scottish football supporter spoke to television cameras and stated:

"I was a nurse in Gaza. I saw what happened. There is a genocide."

The statement quickly circulated on social media, becoming one of the most widely discussed fan reactions during the tournament.

Support for Palestine has also been visible before numerous World Cup matches. Groups of supporters, particularly from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt and Iran, gathered outside stadiums and in public squares chanting pro-Palestinian slogans. Palestinian flags were displayed throughout these gatherings, reflecting continued solidarity among sections of the international football community.

The latest notable incident occurred during the Round of 32 match between tournament hosts the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which Bosnia and Herzegovina lost 2-0.

Despite the defeat, Bosnian supporters continued displaying Palestinian flags throughout the match while chanting slogans in support of Palestine. Their demonstrations remained visible both inside the stadium and among supporters gathered outside the venue, highlighting that expressions of solidarity continued regardless of the sporting result.

The recurring demonstrations throughout the tournament have once again placed FIFA's position regarding Israel under renewed public scrutiny. Calls from activist groups demanding sporting sanctions continue alongside visible displays of support for Palestine by fans attending World Cup matches.

These events illustrate how the world's largest football tournament has also become a stage where international political debates and public activism continue to intersect with global sport.
