Government says country is safe as visa delays leave many Afghans waiting abroad
Afghanistan has urged its citizens stuck abroad—especially in Qatar—to return home while they wait for U.S. visas, saying the country is now safe and open to all.
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi, many Afghans waiting for relocation to the United States have been told they must either return to Afghanistan or seek resettlement in another country.
The government emphasized that Afghanistan is the shared homeland of all its citizens and encouraged people to come back “with confidence and peace of mind.” Officials also stressed that no one is being forced to leave due to security concerns.
At the same time, authorities said those who still wish to move abroad can do so later through legal and organized processes. The government added it is willing to cooperate with other countries to protect the rights of Afghan citizens overseas.
This situation affects thousands of Afghans who have been in limbo since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan 2021, often waiting in countries like Qatar or Pakistan for visas—especially to the United States.
In simple terms, Afghanistan is telling its citizens: if you’re stuck waiting abroad, you can come home safely for now—but options to relocate elsewhere may still be available later.
