At least 15 nationals killed as African countries raise alarm over Ukraine war enlistment
Zimbabwe has confirmed that at least 15 of its citizens have been killed in foreign battlefields, raising serious concerns over what authorities describe as deceptive recruitment into overseas conflicts.
Information Minister Soda Zhemu said the victims were misled into joining foreign wars, stressing that the phenomenon is not legitimate military service but a “sophisticated scheme” involving exploitation and potential human trafficking.
The issue reflects a wider trend across Africa. Ukrainian officials have identified more than 1,700 fighters from 36 African countries serving in Russian ranks in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Kenya, among the hardest-hit countries, estimates that over 1,000 of its citizens have been recruited, with only a fraction repatriated and many believed to have died. Ghana and South Africa have also reported similar cases, including confirmed fatalities among their nationals.
Governments across the continent are increasingly warning about recruitment networks targeting vulnerable individuals with promises of jobs or financial incentives.
The rising number of casualties highlights the far-reaching human cost of the Ukraine conflict, as it continues to draw foreign nationals into a distant and deadly war.
