Health authorities urge vigilance as new infections emerge during the rainy season.

Zambia Reports Two Cholera Deaths as Cases Rise

Zambian health authorities have reported two deaths and 17 new cholera cases within 24 hours, raising concerns about the spread of the disease and prompting renewed calls for public caution.

According to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), 14 of the new cases were recorded in Lusaka, while three additional cases were reported in Mpulungu district along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in northern Zambia.

Health officials confirmed that both fatalities occurred in the Kanyama area of Lusaka, one of the communities most affected by the outbreak.

Speaking on state television, Doreen Shempela, Director of Public Health Policy, Diplomacy and Communication at ZNPHI, said authorities are working with partners to strengthen laboratory capacity, surveillance systems and treatment response.

Officials warned that cholera outbreaks tend to increase during the rainy season, urging citizens to follow hygiene and sanitation measures to help limit the spread of the disease.
