Global conflict drives shortages and rising prices

Zambia Declares Fuel Emergency

The Zambian government has declared the country’s fuel supply situation an emergency as the war in the Middle East continues to disrupt global energy flows. Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has caused shortages thousands of kilometers away, leaving residents struggling to find fuel and businesses slowing down.

Local voices reflect the strain: “You have to spend time looking for fuel. The war should come to an end,” said resident Fredrick Nabuzoka. Another, Fridah Mbiza, explained how her business has suffered because she can no longer move as freely.

Energy expert Johnstone Chikwanda warned that the crisis affects about 75% of African countries, with Zambia facing both rising prices and fears over availability. In response, the cabinet has approved temporary relief measures, including suspending VAT and excise duty on petrol and diesel imports for three months.
