World Cup Faces Human Rights Concerns

This summer’s FIFA World Cup 2026 is meant to celebrate global football across United States, Canada, and Mexico but a new report raises concerns about what fans might experience off the pitch.

According to Amnesty International, there are growing risks linked to freedom of expression, policing, and immigration policies during the tournament.

In the United States, which will host most matches, the report highlights strict immigration controls, possible detentions, and increased surveillance. Some international fans may also face tighter visa rules or financial requirements to enter the country.

In Mexico, concerns focus on the heavy presence of security forces and how protests or public gatherings might be handled. In Canada, there are reports that some public services have been disrupted to accommodate the tournament’s organization.

While officials in all three countries say these measures are necessary to ensure safety, Amnesty warns that stronger security could come at the expense of civil liberties.

The report suggests that balancing safety and freedom will be a key challenge as the World Cup approaches especially for an event meant to unite people from around the world.
