Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says he hopes the US will return to active participation in WHO in the future.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has strongly rejected the reasons given by the United States for leaving the UN health agency.
In a post on X, Tedros said the claims made by Washington were “untrue” and warned that the withdrawal would make both the US and the world “less safe.” He emphasized that the US was a founding member and had contributed greatly to WHO’s achievements over nearly eight decades.
The US officially completed its withdrawal after almost 78 years of membership. The decision took effect on January 22, following the required one-year notice period under international rules.
WHO officials also defended their response to the Covid-19 crisis, denying accusations that they failed to share important information or mishandled the early stages of the outbreak. The agency said it has always acted impartially and serves all 194 member states equally, respecting each country’s sovereignty.
Former US President Donald Trump has long criticized WHO, especially during and after the pandemic. He accused the organization of being too close to China, repeating incorrect information from Beijing, and unfairly criticizing US travel bans. He also argued that the US was paying more than its fair share compared to countries like China.
Despite the departure, Tedros said WHO remains committed to working with all countries and hopes the US may return to active participation in the future.
