Visit backs Hungary’s leader ahead of elections
US Vice President JD Vance met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Budapest on Tuesday, voicing strong support for his re-election bid. Vance praised Orbán as “one of the only true statesmen in Europe” and emphasized the importance of US-Hungary ties, highlighting economic and trade relations.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó welcomed Vance and his wife, Usha, before the vice president joined Orbán for campaign events ahead of Hungary’s April 12 parliamentary elections. US President Donald Trump has also endorsed Orbán, calling him a “strong and powerful” leader.
According to Bloomberg, Hungary is expected to finalize a $500 million oil deal with the US during Vance’s visit, underscoring the economic dimension of the trip alongside political support.
