UK police find no explosives in suspected US airbase plot

Britain's counter-terrorism police have confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were discovered during searches connected to a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford, a military airbase utilised by US forces to launch operations against Iran.Specialist officers stated that whilst no viable explosive devices were uncovered, a quantity of petrol was recovered during detailed forensic examinations of vehicles intercepted at the scene.Counter-terror investigators also confirmed that related property searches have been conducted across London, while operational cordons and forensic scenes surrounding RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire are currently being scaled back, with all cordons anticipated to close completely by Wednesday.Bail decisionThe five men arrested on Sunday remain subject to active investigation after being released on bail, with senior police officials defending the move as an operational necessity."I understand why this development will have come as a surprise to many, but I'd like to reiterate that it was an investigative decision, and one which is grounded in experience and careful consideration of policing powers," said Laurence Taylor, head of national counter terrorism policing.
