Appointment controversy sparks national security concerns
Kemi Badenoch has called for the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, accusing him of putting national security at risk over a controversial appointment.
The dispute centers on the decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. Critics say the vetting process was rushed and not handled properly.
During an emergency debate in the House of Commons, Badenoch argued that the government failed to take the issue seriously enough and that the country “deserves better leadership.”
Concerns grew after testimony from Olly Robbins suggested there was strong pressure from the prime minister’s office to quickly finalize Mandelson’s appointment.
Starmer has admitted he made a “wrong” judgment in the process, especially given Mandelson’s past links to Jeffrey Epstein, which has added to the controversy.
The situation has intensified political tensions in the UK, with opposition leaders questioning the government’s decision-making and calling for accountability at the highest level.
