Leadership change comes as Tunisia’s powerful union faces division and political pressure

UGTT Elects New Leader Amid Internal Crisis

Tunisian General Labour Union has chosen a new leader, marking an important shift for one of Tunisia’s most influential institutions.

Slaheddine Selmi, previously deputy secretary general, has been elected to replace Noureddine Tabboubi, who had led the union since 2017.

This leadership change comes at a tense moment. The UGTT has been dealing with serious internal disagreements, with some members criticizing Tabboubi’s leadership, especially over transparency issues. These tensions peaked when he briefly announced his resignation in December, only to take it back later.

The recent congress in Monastir reflected these divisions. Protests broke out as it began, showing that many members are still unhappy and that unity within the union remains fragile.

At the same time, the UGTT is facing increasing pressure from the government. Kais Saied has recently shown support for protesters calling for changes in the union’s leadership. There are also growing disputes over government decisions that could affect how the union is funded.

Despite these challenges, the UGTT remains a major force in Tunisia. Founded in 1946, it played key roles in the fight against colonial rule, opposition to Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and the transition after the 2011 revolution—efforts that contributed to a Nobel Peace Prize 2015.

Now, Slaheddine Selmi faces a difficult task: rebuilding unity within the union, restoring trust, and redefining its role in a changing political landscape.
