DR Congo and Pakistan sign pact to expand defence cooperation

Pakistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand defence and security cooperation, Pakistan’s military said Friday.

A high-level defence delegation from DR Congo, led by Chief of Defense of the Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Banza Mwilambwe Jules, met Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near the capital, Islamabad.

The visiting commander was presented with a guard of honor by a tri-service contingent upon his arrival at GHQ, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing.

The two sides discussed matters of mutual interest, the regional security environment and opportunities to strengthen bilateral defense and security cooperation.

Strengthen ties

“Both dignitaries expressed satisfaction over the longstanding cordial relations” between Pakistan and DR Congo, the ISPR said, adding that the MoU aims to strengthen and broaden defence and security ties.

Earlier, Jules met Pakistan’s Chief of Naval Staff Adm. Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu.

The Congolese defence chief praised the professionalism and operational capabilities of Pakistan’s armed forces and their role in promoting regional peace and stability.

He also acknowledged Pakistan’s progress in defense indigenisation and self-reliance, according to the ISPR.
