Kiplimo Breaks Half Marathon World Record in Lisbon

Jacob Kiplimo from Uganda set a new men’s half marathon world record on Sunday at the race in Lisbon. He finished the race in 57 minutes and 20 seconds, beating the previous record by 10 seconds. The earlier record was held by Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia, who set it in 2024.

Kiplimo started the race strongly, running the first 5 kilometres very quickly with Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich close behind. After the 10-kilometre mark, the pace began to slow, but Kiplimo accelerated again in the final stages to secure the world record.

The Ugandan runner said he believed the record was possible after the first half of the race and pushed harder in the final kilometres. Kipkorir finished second, 48 seconds behind, while Kiprotich came third.

Kiplimo had previously run a faster time in Barcelona in 2025, but World Athletics did not officially recognise it because the race conditions did not fully meet its rules.

In the women’s race, Tsige Gebreselama of Ethiopia defended her title, finishing in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 48 seconds.
