Türkiye offers condolences to Nigeria over military aircraft crash

Türkiye says it is "deeply saddened" over a military aircraft crash in Nigeria's Ondo State.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives resulting from the crash of a military aircraft today in Ondo state of Nigeria," said the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

The statement on Monday also offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident and to the people of Nigeria.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu declared three days of mourning on Tuesday and ordered an investigation into the crash.

Nigerian Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo had told reporters that the aircraft crashed near the Igbokoda Naval Base.

He said 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board, adding that the wreckage had been located and search and rescue operations in the area were ongoing. Keyamo said the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft was travelling from Benin to Lagos.

The Nigerian Air Force later revised the death toll to 25, saying 20 passengers and five crew members were on board and that there were no survivors. It said the aircraft was conducting a routine mission.
