ISWAP militants launch coordinated assaults in Borno state
At least 14 soldiers were killed and several others injured after militants attacked two military bases in northeastern Nigeria, according to security sources.
The attacks were carried out by fighters from Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which is linked to Islamic State.
The first attack happened in Ngoshe in the Gwoza area of Borno State. Militants stormed a Nigerian army base on Tuesday night, killing nine soldiers and a local imam. The attackers reportedly forced troops to retreat, seized weapons and ammunition, and abducted an unknown number of women.
Around the same time, another group of militants attacked a military base in Pulka, also in Gwoza district. In that assault, five soldiers were killed, including a commanding officer.
Several injured soldiers were evacuated to Maiduguri for treatment. The Nigerian Army has not yet commented on the attacks.
Nigeria’s military has recently intensified operations against militant strongholds in the northeast. However, extremist groups like ISWAP and Boko Haram continue to carry out large-scale assaults, often taking advantage of the region’s difficult terrain and porous borders.
For nearly two decades, Borno has been the center of extremist violence in Nigeria, a conflict that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions, according to humanitarian groups.
