The opposition Chadema party had planned a mass protest on Monday over alleged intimidation of its members.
One of Tanzania's most high-profile opposition figures Tundu Lissu was arrested Monday, his party said, as police moved to block a mass protest in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
"Police have arrested Chadema vice chairman Tundu Lissu at his home in Tegeta. A convoy of 11 vehicles took him away without stating to which police station they are going," the Chadema party said on its X account.
The politician had earlier posted a message on social media that police were taking him into custody.
