Bern to summon Israeli ambassador after Knesset vote sparks global criticism
Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry says it will summon Israel’s ambassador after the Israeli parliament approved a controversial law introducing the death penalty for Palestinians convicted of fatal attacks. The law, passed on March 30 with a 62–48 vote, allows executions by hanging, carried out by prison service officers with anonymity and legal immunity.
Swiss officials stressed that the death penalty is “incompatible with the right to life and human dignity” and confirmed that Ambassador Tibor Schlosser will be called in to hear Switzerland’s position directly. The move reflects growing international criticism of Israel’s decision, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported.
