War forces medical staff to make impossible choices as hospitals run out of resources
In war-torn Sudan, doctors are fighting to keep patients alive as the healthcare system nears total collapse. Medical workers like Dr. Jamal Eltaeb are working under extreme pressure, with limited supplies, constant danger, and overwhelming numbers of injured people.
At Al Nao Hospital in Omdurman, Dr. Eltaeb faces daily life-or-death decisions. After a nearby market was hit, leaving more than 100 people injured, he had to decide who could be treated first—knowing not everyone could be saved.
Doctors are dealing with:
-
Severe shortages of medicine and equipment
-
Hospitals damaged or overwhelmed
-
Continuous inflow of war casualties
These conditions force medical staff to perform “triage” at the most extreme level—choosing which patients have the best chance of survival when resources are not enough for everyone.
Another doctor, Dr. Osman Ismail Osman, is also among those trying to keep hospitals functioning despite the chaos.
The situation reflects a broader crisis: Sudan’s healthcare system is collapsing under the weight of ongoing conflict, leaving millions at risk and frontline workers struggling to hold the system together.
