Government condemns “systematic crimes” as fighting intensifies in Darfur and Kordofan
Sudan has called on the international community and human rights organisations to condemn what it describes as “systematic crimes” committed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians.
In a statement issued Saturday, the Sudan Sovereignty Council accused the RSF of grave violations, including attacks on unarmed citizens and the destruction of state institutions. The government urged global and regional bodies to take urgent action to stop the alleged abuses and hold those responsible accountable.
“Targeting civilians and vital facilities represents a dangerous escalation and constitutes a war crime that violates international humanitarian laws and conventions,” the statement said.
The RSF had not responded publicly to the accusations as of Saturday evening. Earlier in the day, the Sudanese army said it repelled a major RSF assault on Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, after fighters attacked the city from five directions in what officials described as one of the fiercest battles in months.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has raged since April 2023, devastating large parts of the country. According to the United Nations and local authorities, more than 20,000 people have been killed and about 14 million displaced. However, research by US universities suggests the death toll could be as high as 130,000.
