European leaders push for de-escalation and multilateral response amid rising regional tensions
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has strongly criticized the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, describing it as “illegal” and a “major mistake,” while calling for an urgent shift toward diplomacy. Speaking during an informal European summit, he stressed that resolving the crisis requires dialogue rather than military escalation.
Sánchez noted that many European leaders do not view the conflict as their own, emphasizing that the priority should be to find a peaceful solution. He also highlighted ongoing efforts within the European Union to coordinate a collective response, including the possibility of forming a “coalition of the willing” to support de-escalation initiatives.
Reaffirming Spain’s position, he stated that any involvement would strictly adhere to international law and multilateral cooperation. He insisted that no lasting solution can be achieved without respecting global legal frameworks and international obligations.
The discussions took place under the leadership of António Costa, at the invitation of Nikos Christodoulides, with European leaders focusing on the broader geopolitical implications of the crisis. Key topics included regional security, energy market disruptions, and the safety of maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
In parallel, Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the summit via videoconference, updating leaders on the situation in Ukraine, reflecting the interconnected nature of current global crises.
The statements reflect growing concern within Europe over the continuation of hostilities, with increasing calls for a political and diplomatic path forward.
