Dorasan Station reopens as symbol of peace
South Korea has resumed a tourist rail service to Dorasan Station, its northernmost border stop near North Korea, in a move seen as part of Seoul’s efforts to ease tensions and support reconciliation.
At a ceremony marking the restart, Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said the train represents “a small starting point toward establishing everyday peace,” allowing citizens to experience peace in daily life rather than as abstract discourse.
The initiative comes as President Lee Jae Myung has extended an olive branch to Pyongyang since taking office in June 2025. While North Korea last month labeled the South its “most hostile state,” leader Kim Jong Un recently acknowledged Lee’s regret over a drone incursion.
Officials expressed hope that the symbolic reopening could eventually lead to reconnecting railways between the two Koreas, fostering reconciliation and cooperation despite ongoing tensions.
