President Lee Jae Myung seeks to ease tensions with Pyongyang after civilians indicted

South Korea Expresses Regret Over Drone Flights

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has publicly expressed regret to North Korea over recent drone flights by private individuals that heightened military tensions. Three people were indicted last month for flying drones into North Korean territory between September and January.

Lee called the actions “reckless” and “unacceptable,” stressing that they caused anxiety among border residents and undermined stability. While he has criticized the incursions before, this marks the first time he has directly conveyed regret to Pyongyang.

Since taking office in June 2025, Lee has extended offers of dialogue, but North Korea has rejected them, labeling South Korea the “most hostile state.”
