Major container shipping lines have rerouted around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, the southern tip of the Cape Peninsula.

Shipping Routes Shift Around Africa as Middle East Tensions Escalate

South Africa’s Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has announced its readiness to assist vessels navigating around the African continent as escalating tensions in the Middle East disrupt key global shipping routes. The conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has increased security risks across strategic maritime corridors, prompting several shipping companies to alter their routes.

SAMSA CEO Dennis Mqadi said the authority is prepared to support ships sailing along South Africa’s coastline by providing navigational guidance, maritime monitoring and safety updates to ensure secure and efficient passage.

Major global shipping companies, including Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM, have suspended transits through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, citing heightened security threats near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical gateway for global energy and cargo shipments.

As a result, many vessels are now rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, travelling along Africa’s east coast before heading north through the Atlantic towards Europe. This alternative route significantly increases distance and can extend delivery times by up to two weeks, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global trade and supply chains.
