Rubaya mine accident underscores dangers facing artisanal miners in conflict zone.

Six Killed in Collapse at Congo’s Key Coltan Mining Site

At least six people have died after a mining shaft collapsed at the Rubaya coltan mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Witnesses said the victims  three women and three men  were killed when the ground suddenly gave way at the site in North Kivu province.

Rubaya is considered the largest coltan mine in the country and plays a major role in the global supply of the mineral used in electronic devices.

Despite its economic importance, the mine is known for hazardous working conditions, with thousands of artisanal miners operating with limited safety equipment.

The area has been under the control of the M23 rebel group since April 2024, which reportedly collects significant revenue from taxing coltan production.

The latest tragedy follows another major landslide at the same mine last month, highlighting ongoing risks in one of the world’s most contested mining regions.
